Laishram Bombayla Devi entered the pre-quarterfinals of the Olympic Games archery event posting two fine wins at the Sambodromo on Wednesday.
Bombayla defeated Lin Shih-Chia of Chinese Taipei in the round of 32 after knocking out Laurence Baldauff of Austria in the first round early in the morning.
The Manipuri had been India's most consistent performer here and against Lin, she didn't allow a mid-match wobble to affect her, winning 6-2.
"It was windy, but I was able to adjust well," said Bombayla, who next faces Alejandra Valencia of Mexico in the pre-quarterfinals.
Avatar ousted
India's lone judoka here, Avatar Singh, made a quick exit as he lost in the first round of the men's 90kg category. Avatar was beaten by Popole Misenga of the Refugee Olympic Team.
Rowing called off
The rowing events scheduled for Wednesday were cancelled due to high winds at the 2000M course on the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. The events were cancelled on Sunday too because of winds. Though competition did take place on Saturday, many rowers had complained about the rough conditions.
Sivalingam out
India's weightlifting campaign too came to a disappointing end with Sathish Kumar Sivalingam finishing fourth in the men's 77kg event Group B category.
National record holder Sivalingam lifted 148kg in snatch and 181kg in clean and jerk for a total of 329kg to finish fourth in the six-lifter competition. Group B is meant for lower-ranked competitors who have registered lower entry weights and by finishing fourth even in this category, Sivalingam has no chance to be on the podium.Laishram Bombayla Devi entered the pre-quarterfinals of the Olympic Games archery event posting two fine wins at the Sambodromo on Wednesday.
